Evelyn Lorene Eckley Shima, 88, of Olathe, formerly of Hutchinson, died Jan. 2, 2011, at Olathe. She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Grant County, Okla., the daughter of Fred and Clara Oathout Shuster. She graduated from Caldwell High School, Caldwell, on May 21, 1942, and received her registered nursing degree from Mercy School of Nursing in Hutchinson on Dec. 1, 1951. She was a longtime resident of Hutchinson, moving to Olathe on Sept. 5, 2006. After working for the Gage Hall Clinic from 1951 to 1956, she went to work for USD #308 as a school nurse for 31 years, retiring on May 28, 1987.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and Hutchinson Area Retired Teachers Association.

On April 21, 1945, she married John W. Eckley in Hutchinson. He died Jan. 10, 1970. She then married David F. Shima on June 30, 1972, in Hutchinson. He died May 2, 2003. Survivors include: sons, Craig Eckley and wife Fran, Mound, Minn., Alan Eckley and wife Beth, Olathe; stepson, Randy Shima and wife Rebecca, Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Kathleen Meinecke and husband David, Wichta; brothers-in-law, Wallace Yust of Hutchinson, Gene Shima and wife Shirley, Billings, Mont., and Bernie Shima and wife Gin, Loveland, Colo.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Yust.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Michael P. Milliken presiding. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson.
