Evelyn Francis Harmon, 93, died Aug. 13, 2010, at Hospice House. She was born April 13, 1917, in Wichita, the fourth daughter of Jess R. and Leona Richardson. She attended school in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1935. After two years at Wichita University, she worked for the Wichita Beacon Newspaper. She married Vern B. Minor on Dec. 5, 1936. She was a homemaker until his death on June 8, 1960.
During her earlier married years, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church in scouting and as the Cherub Choir director. She served as Worthy Matron of the Order of The Eastern Star, Silver Leaf Chapter #464, obtaining a life membership. Upon the death of Vern, she successfully ran for office and was elected as Clerk of the Magistrate Court of Reno County, a position she held until retiring in 1967.
She married Richard Harmon on May 27, 1967, at which time she joined the family business, The Harmon Furniture Store, which later became The Harmon Discount Furniture Warehouse. When Evelyn and Richard both retired from the business, they traveled throughout the world. After traveling and being avid golfers, they spent the four winter months at their home in Mesa, Ariz., playing golf and then spent the other eight months of the year at their home in Hutchinson.
She was the last surviving member of the Richardson family. She is survived by: her husband Richard, of the home; sons, Gary Minor and his wife Ann, McPherson, and Tom Minor and his wife Carole Sue of Mesa, Ariz.; three step-children, Robert Harmon of Bradford, Mass., Richard "Kim" Harmon and his wife Peggy of Wichita Falls, TX, and Nancy "Kali" Standish and her husband Tom of Kansas City, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Elliott Chapel with Dr. Vern Minor officiating. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum.
