Floyd Elliott Lyman, 100, of Hutchinson, died peacefully and naturally on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, in Lawrence, after a full and blessed life. He was born April 2, 1917, to Chester and Amanda (Noyes) Lyman. Floyd was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Burton, Dorothy, Virginia, Warren and Helen; his first wife, Ernestine; daughter, Rebecca; grandson, Michael Charles; second wife, Moretha; and stepdaughter, Marilyn.
Floyd was a lifelong resident of Hutchinson. He was a 1934 graduate of Hutchinson High School. During this period of life, Floyd was very active in tennis and became the Hutchinson City Champion. In 1942, Floyd joined the United States Army and became a Captain at Camp Hood in Texas. He was stationed in the Philippines when WWII ended and was part of the team that closed down some of the North Pacific bases, along with their equipment. That team also organized the return back to Japan of many Japanese prisoners of war.
In 1946, Floyd met and married a high school classmate, Ernestine Mettlen. Together, they had six children: three boys and three girls. Their family continued to grow over the years and now includes five grandkids and seven great-grandkids. While raising his family, Floyd was employed by Colladay Hardware Company as a buyer for 34 years. He was very proud of being a part of a team growing Colladay into a large regional wholesaler. After 36 wonderful years together, Ernestine passed away in 1983.
In 1985, Floyd was twice blessed and married Moretha Miller, a classmate of Floyd's sister. He welcomed her daughters, Anne, Marilyn, Jeanne, and Patty into his family. Floyd and Moretha had a wonderful relationship together and enjoyed traveling and visiting their extended family. Floyd also enjoyed playing golf, playing his last round at age 94. He was an avid KU and Hutchinson Blue Dragon fan all of his life. After 28 loving years together, Moretha passed away in 2013. Floyd continued to live at Wesley Towers until the fall of 2017, when he moved to Lawrence to be with family.
He will be forever remembered by his family: sons, Douglas (Pam), Springfield, Missouri, Richard (Charlene), Lawrence, Kelly, Hutchinson; daughters, Ginger Hayes (Kent), and Terry Lyman, both of Lawrence; grandkids and great-grandkids, Scott Lundemo (Kim), Zachary and Addisyn, Anchorage, Alaska, Robert and Krysten Lyman, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kristel Knopinski (Jason), Anslei and Simon, Castle Rock, Colorado, Brooke Glenn (Mike) and Jaxon, Springfield, Missouri, Nicholas Hayes (Brandy) and Abigail of Lawrence; stepdaughters, Ann Francisco (Mike), Tucson, Arizona, Jeanne Wheeler (Sam), Sonora, California, Patty Miller, Haven; step-grandkids, Clark Wilson, Longview, Texas, Tom Wilson, Michelle Orduna, Tucson, Arizona, Adriana Francisco, Las Vegas, Nevada, Jack Unruh (Barbara), Raleigh, North Carolina, Mike Unruh (Jenner), Big Sky, Montana, Pamela Lytle (Chris), and Jon Wheeler (Erin), Sonora, California, Leslie Nelson (Gerald), Merced, California, Debbie Taylor (Anthony), San Marcos, California, and Patrick Miller, Haven.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2017, at Wesley Towers Evans Chapel, 3709 Asbury Drive, Hutchinson, with Sonny Banning, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 8:30 a.m. until service time Friday at Wesley Towers Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Hospice, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
