Fred J. Krey, 96, died March 30, 2014, at Wind Crest, in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Fred was born on a farm north of Zenith, Kansas, on October 12, 1917, to Carrie Mary (Broker) and Cephas Marion Krey. He graduated from Sylvia High School in 1936, and married Maxine Lavielle on July 14, 1939. Maxine passed away on September 18, 2004. Fred and Maxine farmed and raised cattle in Reno County. They were members of Zenith Presbyterian Church, and various farming and community organizations. They moved to Wesley Towers in Hutchinson after retirement, spending many winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. Fred moved to Wind Crest, a retirement community in Highlands Ranch, Colo., in 2008, to be near family.

A daughter, Deanna J. King (Larry) of Merced, Calif., and a son, Rodney F. Krey (Donna) of Grand Lake, Colo., and a brother, Max A. Krey (Helen) of Grand Junction, Colo., survive. Other survivors include: two granddaughters, Angie Hintz (Dan), and Lindsay Gillham (Chad); and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, June L. Hancock (David), and a great-grandson, Colin Gillham.

Fred enjoyed bowling, playing pool, and watching sports on T.V. He was a wonderful story-teller and had an infectious laugh. He loved to tell jokes, do puzzles, and made many friends wherever he went.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, in Sylvia Cemetery with the Reverend Jim Rhaesa officiating. Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. May 30, 2014, at Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch, Colo. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
