Obituary

Frederick J. "Fred" Burke, 77, died March 16, 2007, at Pleasant View Home, Inman.

He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Rodman, N.Y., the son of William and Ida Patterson Burke. He graduated from Carthage High School, Carthage, N.Y., and attended Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. A resident of Hutchinson since 1969, he was retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service, having served in the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. He was the owner and operator of Fred's Appliance Repair, retiring in 2002.

He belonged to the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68.

On June 9, 1953, he married Barbara Crawford in Clovis, N.M. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Frederick Jr., Hutchinson; a daughter, Karen Gilliland and husband, Jim, Hutchinson; three brothers, Clifford, Great Bend, N.Y., and Ronnie Gaines and Kenny Gaines, both of Copenhagen, N.Y.; three sisters, Dorothy Bloss and Doris Nevills, both of Carthage, N.Y., and Mary Towne, Plano, Texas; and two grandchildren, Dane Schmidt and Brooke Schmidt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Cecil Burke.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Tim Soule presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, with military graveside rites conducted by the United States Naval Reserve.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice Care of Kansas, McPherson Office, or the Alzheimer's Association, both in care of the funeral home.
