Gary L. DeShazer, 72, died October 18, 2013, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born August 6, 1941, in Blue Rapids, Kansas, the son of Elwood Frank and Margeruite Marie (Straub) DeShazer.

Gary graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1959, and then from Washburn University in 1964. In 1995, he received his masters in adult education from Kansas Newman University. Gary was a coach and a teacher. He started coaching football in Munden and then later in Halstead, Kansas. Additionally, he was a mortgage broker and insurance agent, and was the owner of DeShazer Insurance Agency. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a church elder. Gary was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents and the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club. He was an avid football fan and traveled to watch many a football game for various local teams and he enjoyed all the years he was a coach for the YMCA.

On August 14, 1960, he married Sharon J. Stritesky in Blue Rapids, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Gary DeShazer, Jr. and wife Kim of Houston, Texas, Dr. Eric J. DeShazer and wife Gretchen of Lincoln, Neb., and Dennis DeShazer of Louisburg; five grandchildren, Danae DeShazer of Sarasota, Fla., Danielle DeShazer of Lawrence, Madeline and Dylan DeShazer both of Louisburg, and Dakota DeShazer of Lincoln, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald E. DeShazer, and a grandson, Derek Michael DeShazer.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 16, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Dr. Lowell Knauss presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and until service, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kansas Learning Center for Health, or the Credit Education Resource Foundation, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson KS 67501.
