Gary D. Rayl, 78, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2015. He was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Hutchinson, the son of Leo and Dollie (Beaty) Rayl.
He was a 1955 graduate of Buhler High School, also graduating from Kansas City Bible College, Hutchinson Community College, McPherson College, and Wichita State University. He received his Master's degree in Administration of Justice from WSU. Gary retired from the Kansas Department of Corrections as Deputy Secretary of Corrections of Kansas. He also held positions as warden at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, Arizona State Penitentiary, Florence, Ariz., Ft. Grant Prison, Ft. Grant, Ariz., and Kansas State Penitentiary, Lansing, El Dorado and Toronto Honor Camps of Kansas during his career. He was a member of Countryside Baptist Church, the American Correctional Assoc., KPOA, KS Sheriff's Assoc., life memberships of the American Poultry Assoc., and International Waterfowl Breeders Assoc.
He was married to Betty J. Farney. Then later on July 11, 1980, he married Beverley A. Helm in Phoenix, Ariz. She survives. Gary is also survived by: children, Brad, Kaye Rayl Heitschmidt (Dick), Dennis (Shirley), all of Hutchinson, Robert (Lisa) of Republic, Mo.; four stepchildren, Deena Prichard (Mike) of Hutchinson, Joel Helm (Melody) of Leesburg, Ga., Mark Helm (Lisa) of Petaluma, Calif., Susan Long of Hutchinson; a sister, June Rose Ford; half-sisters, Jeannie Rayl, Jessie Rayl, Patty Barnes and Dianne Blick; sister-in-law, Carol Rayl; eight grandchildren, Abby Rayl Pomeroy, Parker Rayl, Tyler Rayl, Tanner Rayl (Jessica), Tucker Rayl, Payton Rayl, Baylee Rayl, Cody Heitschmidt (Tamara); ten step grandchildren, Kelly Massey (Buck), Kasey Thiessen (Derek), Ethan Helm, Hannah Mays (Shad), Jessie Helm, Sara Helm, Lindsay Helm, Eric Long, Cole Long, Kirsten Long; and three great-grandchildren, Chance and Baylee Heitschmidt, Shelby Thiessen. He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Clarence "Bud" and Gordon Leo; and half-sister, Donna Dolan Rothwell.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Countryside Baptist Church, 819 W. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kyker presiding. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
