Obituary

Gary Dean Trostle, 87, of Nickerson, passed peacefully January 18, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. He was born November 9, 1934, in Johnson, to Don L. and Ethel Lenore (Webb) Trostle, the first son of 3 children.

Gary graduated from Nickerson Community High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, and was assigned in Korea. Following his service in the Army, Gary returned to Nickerson and took over the family farming operation. He was active in the Nickerson community, serving on the COOP board of directors for several years, and was active in the Salem Church of the Brethren.

Gary enjoyed archery and successfully competed in local archery competitions. One of his favorite pastimes was the raising and showing of Great Danes, where he traveled across the country to show his dogs. He had a passion for Christmas lights and would decorate his home, the driveway, and the many trees surrounding his house with lights for the Holidays. People from miles away would travel to see the spectacle.

For the many years his wife Mary was a Director at the Good Samaritan facility, Gary would often volunteer to help with maintenance tasks and a variety of activities at the facility.

On October 11, 1969, he married Mary Herbstreith. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Melody Smith and Steve Trostle; grandchildren, Michael Bascom, Cody Smith, and Kayla Smith; great-grandchildren, Logan Smith, Savannah Smith, and Gabe Ferguson; brother, Keith; and brothers-in-law, Bill, Jerry, and Dale.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Donna Nystrom.

Per Gary's wishes, no public memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to a charity of your choice in Gary's honor, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.
