Obituary

Gayla "Kaye" Baker, 69, lost a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer at Hospice House on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006.

She was born March 31, 1937, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Gale A. and Agnes Nunemaker Locke. She graduated in 1955 from Arlington High School and in 1956 from Adela Hale Business College. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, formerly of Arlington, she was the longest employee of the Medical Center, with 38 years, working in pediatrics and then the oncology department for the past 15 years. Her positive attitude was an inspiration to patients and fellow employees. Many special, long-lasting, loving friendships with co-workers were formed during her time there. Co-workers got to know her two grandsons, Brady and Brenden, and how proud she was of them, through her many stories and pictures. Kaye loved working and being in her flower gardens with her husband, Ken, and having family come over so she could proudly walk them through the gardens and sit in the arbor, which her brother, Lew, built for her.

She was of the Methodist faith.

On Dec. 28, 1954, she married Kenneth Eugene Baker in Arlington. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Kerry and wife, Cindy, Arlington; her parents, Gale A. and Agnes Nunemaker Locke, Arlington; a brother, Lewis Locke and wife, Judy, Ellensburg, Wash.; two grandsons, Brady and Brenden Baker, Arlington; and nephews and their families, Patrick, Lisa, Jeremy and Stuart Locke, Bethesda, Md., and Alan, Mary, Ellen and Brian Locke, Seattle.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Keith Dellenbach presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Kaye loved family, friends, her job, flowers, animals, sports and ceramics, but most of all her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Kaye Baker Memorial Fund for her grandsons' education fund or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Personal condolences may be sent to www.elliottmortuary.com.
