Gaynell “Gay” Elizabeth Lewis, 83, of Pretty Prairie, died November 4, 2026, at Sterling Village, Sterling. She was born April 28, 1943, in Cloquet, Minnesota, to John and Mirelle (Bijold) Berg.
After high school, Gay worked at the Minnesota Star Tribune for five years. While raising her daughters, she had the wonderful privilege of being a homemaker. Later in life, Gay worked at Kroger in the KASH department where she met many new people who turned into life-long friends.
On August 17, 1971, she married Junior Lewis, in Casper Wyoming. They shared nearly 39 years of marriage prior to his death on May 19, 2010.
Gay was the ever-present and vibrant family cheerleader. She gleefully attended every cheerleading event, football and basketball games, cross country meets and even rode the pep bus with her grandchildren. Gay was always ready to attend the rodeo and loved the barrel races. Above all, she loved and adored her family.
Gay was a highly successful barrel horse trainer who had a true passion for the sport and loved nothing more than running barrels. She was also a pioneer in the rodeo world. Gay was an advocate for the women’s barrel race to be held during the rodeo performance rather than as a separate event following the performance. Her dedication, passion, and efforts helped pave the way for future generations of barrel racers.
Gay is survived by: adored daughters, Mardee (Shawn) Hollenbeck of Alva, Oklahoma, and Lisa (Aaron) Willis of Abbyville; beloved grandchildren, Brandi (Ethan) McDowell of Mooreland, Oklahoma, Blair (Logan) Buehler of Emporia, Hazen Willis, Holden Willis, and Shantell Willis all of Abbyville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; cherished husband; and sister, Dee Ann Berg.
Cremation had taken place.
