Obituary

Gene Avers, 87, died Sept. 14, 2007, at the Hospice House.

He was born July 23, 1920, in Manhattan, the son of Thomas B. and Verna Bell Avers. He was a longtime Hutchinson resident. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State University for two years in topographical engineering. He worked at Fort Riley on a building placement when it was being built, and was the manager of The Bootery, Hutchinson, later becoming a real estate broker for Terry Messing Real Estate for 30 years. For the last 10 years of his career, he owned Avers Real Estate, Hutchinson. He was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He belonged to Holy Cross Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was very active in Special Olympics here in Hutchinson, and with TECH, and was a longtime announcer for the National Junior College Basketball Tournaments.

On Dec. 27, 1942, he married Lorraine Steele in Tampa, Fla. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Jim Avers and wife, Judy, Wichita, Bob Avers and wife, Pam, Edmond, Okla., and Don Avers and wife, Trudie, Riverside, Calif.; three daughters Debbie Miller and husband, Phil, Hutchinson, Connie Avers, Valley Center, and Jan Connizzo and husband, Jim, Manhattan; a sister, Margaret Rindon, Lees Summit, Mo.; and 13 grandchildren, Paul Avers, Jason Avers, Brandon Avers, Jill Fortner, Monica Holder, Staci Charlton, Bryce Miller, Jamie Connizzo, Christin Connizzo, Ashley Connizzo, Gavin Avers, Trevor Avers, and Colin Avers; and 10 great-grandchildren, Alex Avers, Jacob Fortner, Clair Fortner, Violet Avers, Jake Holder, Catilyn Murrill, Alex Murrill, Andrew, Ashley and Alex Charlton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday with visitation to follow in the chapel at Elliott mortuary. Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Father Joe Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Burial will be in Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
