Gene Austin Buie, 82, of Hutchinson, died January 12, 2024 at his home. He was born April 16, 1941, in Sweet Springs, MO., to John H. and Hazel N. (Krause) Buie.

Gene graduated from Olathe High School in 1959 and was a retired laborer at the Delco Battery plant in Olathe. Gene was very involved with youth baseball in DeSoto and surrounding areas. For over 50 years, Gene served as a Senior Babe Ruth coach, as a Babe Ruth District Commissioner in the Kansas City area, and as an Assistant State Commissioner for Senior Babe Ruth Baseball in Kansas. Gene also enjoyed umpiring baseball and during the late 1970's and 80's he could be found umpiring Junior College, American Legion, and Babe Ruth Baseball across Kansas and the Midwest. In 2019, Gene was inducted into the Babe Ruth Baseball Midwest Plains Regional Hall of Fame.

In 2006, Gene married Elizabeth Jane Mclver in Hutchinson, together they loved to travel and enjoy new adventures.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Beth," son Gene "G.A." Buie, Jr. and wife Cinnemon of Gardner, step-son Charles "Chuck" Davis and wife Pam of DeSoto, step-daughter Tammy Davis of Lawrence, step-daughter Melissa Dodson and husband Harold of Hutchinson, sister Barb Miller and husband Rick of North Carolina, grandchildren: David, Katie, Becky, Chrissie, Daniel, Morgan, Abigail, Skyler, Austin, Quinton, and Bryce and 14 great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his father John in 1990, his mother Hazel in 2009, his ex-wife Mary Elizabeth (mother of Darcy, Chuck, Tammy, and G.A.) in 1993, step-daughter Darcy Davis in 2023, and sister Betty Mahan in 1998.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Friends may sign a memorial book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
