Obituary

Gene Richard Field, 90, died March 2, 2014, at Golden Plains Health Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Hutchinson, to Brice W. and Helen Lucille (Gibbs) Field.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hutchinson High School. When he was 16, he played baseball for the Hutchinson Pirates, which was a farm team for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He served in the United States Army from 1943-1945. Gene received a Purple Heart after he was wounded in Germany. He was a member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361 and Loyal Order of Moose #982. After the war, Gene played fast pitch softball for the Hutchinson Merchants. He worked at Supply Service, then Wilson Window Company. In 1966, Gene went to work as an assembly worker at Cessna until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

On June 3, 1948, he married Velma Lucille Achilles in Hutchinson. She died May 1, 1978. On April 11, 1981, he married Helen Rita (Seems) Tompkins in Reno County. She died Jan. 15, 2012.

Survivors include: children, Paula Carnes (Jerry), Terry Field (Debbie), Russell Field (Jenny), all of Hutchinson and Stacy Lee (Bob) of St, Louis, Mo.; brother, Robert Field (Lelya) of South Hutchinson; stepdaughter, Yvette Korb (Stephen) of Lenexa; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Beverly Hamer.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Luke Helmuth officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
