Obituary

George A. Benson, 85, died Jan. 10, 2007, at Golden Plains Health Care Center.

He was born March 29, 1921, in Lamar, Colo., the son of Roy and Maudie McKenney Benson. He graduated from Hutchinson High School Class of 1939, attended Hutchinson Junior College for a year and held the state record for the pole vault from 1939 to 1969. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson since the age of five years, he was a retired foundry superintendent for Krause Plow for 35 years.

He belonged to Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, Sunday school classes within the church and other organizations in the church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific.

On Aug. 17, 1941, he married Mildred E. Cunday in Nickerson. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Gary, Wichita, and David, Hutchinson; three daughters, Connie Guthrie, Salina, and Cheri Jones and Marci Stowell, both of Hutchinson; three brothers, Robert, Wichita, Walter, Hutchinson, and James, New Jersey; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Edward Benson and William Benson.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sara Dillinger presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum.
