Obituary

George H. Ewald, 90, died Dec. 5, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born June 24, 1917, in Hutchinson, the son of George J. and Anna I. Flintrop Ewald. He graduated from St. Teresa's High School in 1935 and from Salt City Business College in1937. A lifetime Hutchinson resident, he had worked as a carhop in the late 1920s to early 1930s at A-A Drug Store, 4th and Pershing, then Coberly-Hayes Drug Store, 4th and Plum, during high school. After high school, he worked for George Sours as a bookkeeper at Reno Creamery, then for the George E. Gano Grain Company. Following World War II, he opened a stockbroker's office in the Wolcott Building and worked as a stockbroker for 61 years, retiring in July 2007 from Fahnestock and Co.

He belonged to Church of the Holy Cross, attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 612, and in 1947 became a Fourth Degree Knight in the Columbia Assembly. George also enjoyed raising money for charity and rang bells for the Salvation Army at Christmastime for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a Sergeant Major in the Signal Corps.

On Feb. 14, 1952, he married Rose M. Jandos in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Jerome, and his wife, Dolores, Wichita; a sister, Juliana Ewald, Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Clare and Andrew Ewald, both of Wichita; a nephew, Tim Ewald, Wichita; and a niece, Barbara Kaufman, Newton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel J. Ewald; and a granddaughter, Anne Marie Ewald.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday Dec. 9, 2007, at the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday Dec. 10, 2007, at the church, with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
