Gilbert A. "JR" Shuler, 87, died July 7, 2010, at his home, Hutchinson.
He was born October 13, 1922, at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, the son of Gilbert A. and Mary Ruth Lyon Shuler.
He was a 1941 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He then served during World War II with the 1st Battalion 3rd Marines. Gilbert returned to farm on the family farm and he also worked for Dillon Warehouse.
He was a lifetime member of Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post No. 1361, the American Legion Lyle Rishel Post No. 68 and was also a 4-H Leader.
On January 23, 1949, he married Betty Rose Heiken in Bushton, Kan. She survives.
Other survivors include: son, Max Shuler and wife Irmtraud, Hutchinson; a daughter, DiAnn Bussard and husband Max, Hutchinson; son, Mark Shuler, Havana; son, Ernest Shuler and wife Jackie, Hutchinson; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Patty Shuler, and a great- granddaughter, Kayla Gibbs.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Kite presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mitchell Cemetery Association in care of the mortuary.
