Obituary

Gladys Adams Black, 90, died Sept 13, 2010 at Dillon Living Center, Hutchinson.

She was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Beggs, Okla., the daughter of John Arthur and Mary Edna Williams Phillips.

Raised in Hoxie, she lived in various parts of Kansas and Oklahoma, including Cunningham, Newkirk, Okla., and Kiowa before moving to Hutchinson.

Gladys was a cook for Golden Plains Health Care Center as well as was a cook and waitress for numerous restaurants. She enjoyed playing cards with friends at Mission Place, Delos V. Smith Senior Center, and Elmdale Community Center.

In 1938, she married Charles Arthur Adams in Okmulgee, Okla. He died Oct. 16, 1975. In 1983, she married Harold Black in Hutchinson. He died Oct. 13, 1992.

She is survived by a son, Stephen Arthur Adams and wife Velera, Hutchinson; daughter, Delores "Dee" Coggins and husband Les, Kiowa; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Thomas; four brothers, Roy, Orville, George and Floyd Phillips; an infant sister, Marie Odell Phillips; grandson, Ted Thomas; and son-in-law, Mike Thomas.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at Elliot Mortuary Chapel, with Chaplain Reta Joy Campbell presiding. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa, with Pastor Gib Clark presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Faith Home Health and Hospice in care of the mortuary.
