Obituary

Gladys Mosier, 90, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Thorne Care Center. She was born July 6, 1923, in Lawrence, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Young) Shirar. The family moved to the Nickerson area in 1926. She attended Eagle Grade School and Nickerson High School, graduating in the class of 1940. While attending HCC, she was a waitress at the Bisonte Hotel. She put together a scrap book for the recent celebration. She taught 3rd and 4th grades at Nickerson Grade School. She was a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren near Nickerson.

She married Norman Verle Mosier on June 6, 1943. They farmed in rural Sterling and she was a homemaker. Gladys was involved with 4-H, teaching cooking classes for both Salem and Huntsville Clubs, and loved entering foods at the State Fair. She also put together items for the recent fair celebration.

In 1997, Norman and Gladys moved to the Wesley Towers Campus. She lived there until she passed away. Gladys had volunteered in various capacities and was named a State Volunteer of the Year. She was especially active with the Wesley Players Drama Group.

Gladys is survived by: son, Philip Mosier and wife Sandy of Hutchinson; daughters, Sandra Detter and husband Jay D. of Alma, Arkansas, Shirla Hill and husband Bruce of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and Lynn Caywood and Doug Hoskinson of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Sandy Nussbaum Mosier; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on August 7, 1999, son, Douglas Wayne Mosier, sister, Josephine Shirar McGonigle, and nephew, Dennis Con McGonigle.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Jeanine I. Rishel officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Penwell Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund, Nickerson High School Alumni Association, or to the Salem Church of the Brethren, all in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, Ks 67501.
