Obituary

Glen W. Mathias, 74, died Jan. 25, 2010, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, completing his journey on earth and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1936, in Stafford, to Harvey Merle and Lola Toms Mathias.



He was a retired employee with the Kansas Department of Transportation, working there for 37 years. Glen belonged to the First Southern Baptist Church in Nickerson, where he led the congregation in singing for 17 years, and later joined the Corner Stone Baptist Church in Hutchinson, where he led the congregational music for 18 years until last year, when he lost the hearing in his left ear. Gospel music was his passion and always enjoyed singing when he had the opportunity. Glen had a multitude of friends, and his two words to friends or strangers were "Keep smiling" when they departed. He will be greatly missed.

He served in the US Army.

On Sept. 30, 1956, he married Carol Corwin in Sterling. They would have been married for 54 years this year. She survives.

Other survivors include: sons, Bryan and wife Pam, Hutchinson, and Shawn and wife Brenda, Nickerson; five grandchildren, Janessa Dickson and husband Chris, Hutchinson, Jessica Mathias, Hutchinson, Justin Mathias and wife Hope, Hutchinson, Janeane Alkire and husband Nick, Hutchinson, Margaret Naegele, Hutchinson; seven great-grandchildren, Maelea Mathias, Kylan and Landyn Dickson, Braden, Leland and Emmalynn Mathias, and Jarrett Alkire; brothers, Leon and wife Jan, Wichita, and Paul and wife Ellen, Hutchinson; sister, Dorothy Gregg, Canon City, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews, and the one that brought him much joy was his little poodle, Molly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Willard.

Funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Larry Wedel officiating. Friends may call today from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will be in Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson, with military graveside rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Educational Fund for his great-grandchildren in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.
