Glenn C. Bentler, 85, died Feb. 12, 2006, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
He was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of William Washington and Cora M. Crane Bentler. He was a 1938 graduate of North High School, Des Moines, Iowa, attended American Institute of Business, Des Moines, and LaSalle Extension University, Chicago. A resident of Hutchinson since 1996, moving from Kansas City, he retired from the Department of Energy after five years as Director of Compliance. He formerly spent 18 years with the Internal Revenue Service, last serving as field audit branch chief.
He belonged to First Baptist Church; was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68; Disabled American Veterans, Kansas City, Mo.; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 A.F. & A.M.; Des Moines Consistory (Scottish Rites); Midian Shrine, Wichita; and Reno County Shrine Club, Hutchinson. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, serving in Algeria, Italy, France and Germany.
In 1947, he married Mary Kruse. She died in 1953. On Oct. 7, 1954, he married Helen Hoover in Des Moines. She died Jan. 18, 2000.
Survivors include: a daughter, Susan Lewis and husband, Gregory K., St. John; and two grandchildren, Joshua K. Lewis, Washington, D.C., and Megan C. Lewis, St. John.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and William; and a sister, Rosamary Calice.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. John Warring presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John, with military graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
