Glenn L. "Butch" Gilliland, 68, died March 31, 2013, at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was born May 15, 1944, the son of Ruben E. and Mabel Ruby (Spangler) Gilliland.
Butch graduated from Haven High School in 1962, Hutchinson Community College in 1970 and attended Wichita State University. He was a Vietnam veteran serving with the US Navy as an E-5. After returning from the service, Butch worked for the Hutchinson Police Department. He then started his truck-driving career, working for Dillon's for 18 years, then Walmart Transportation, and retired from Yellow Freight. After retiring he continued to drive for RCAT. There was never a day Butch was without a job. He started working in the 3rd Grade as a bus boy for places like Eddie's Sunset and The Rambler Steakhouse, which was probably where his love of cooking started. He was a member of the Union Valley Bible Church, American Legion, and the Teamsters Union.
On Aug. 11, 1984, he married Mona Rose Woodson-Metzler in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: four children, Lori Cox and husband Ivan, Angey Hohl, Scott Gilliland and Michelle Gilliland; brother, Rawley E. "Bill" Gilliland; sister, Shirley Keel; and five grandchildren, Kirsten, Seuris, Trey, Clancy and Alyssa. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Everett, Lee, Wilbur, Donal and Gerald "Dutch" Gilliland; two sisters, Loretta "Jean" Thompson and DeEtta Davis.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastors Steve Hodgson and Tim Kraft presiding. Burial, with Navy Honors, will follow at Lerado Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
