Grace Edna Sloan, 102, died March 8, 2015, at Pleasant View Home in Inman, where she resided for nearly ten years. She was born January 7, 1913, in rural Pawnee County near Macksville, KS, the daughter of John and Edna (Wood) Nauert.
Grace married Wayne Sloan on February 28, 1933. They moved to Garfield where they owned and operated a restaurant and barber shop until moving to Larned in 1944. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1959. She later married Lawrence Schartz. He died in 1968.
Grace was a designer at Larned Floral Shop. She later served as Dormitory Director for student nurses at Larned State Hospital. She was a flag maker and seamstress at Santa Fe Trail Center and was a homemaker and volunteer. Grace was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed creative handiwork of all kinds.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of VFW Auxiliary, all of Larned.
She is survived by: a daughter, Shirley Hinkel Pauls and husband Harold of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jay (Debbie) Hinkle, and Jill (Bob) McConnell, all of Wichita, and Joy (Tim) Towle of Lawrence; great-grandchildren, Nate Hinkel, Robin (Jeff) Fenn, Katy (Scott) Timken, Stacie (Clinton) Proctor, and Leah and Megan Towle; great-great-grandson, Graham Fenn; six step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Ed Nauert, and sisters, Mary Riddle, Esther Rickert, Helen Broadbooks, Nadine Gilmore, Dorothy Moyer, Ruth Wilson, and an infant sister, Marguerite Nauert.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, in Garfield Cemetery, with Father John Schmeidler officiating. Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, is in charge of arrangements.
