Obituary

Grant Raymond Colby Jr., 72, died Aug. 1, 2013, at Thorne Care Center, Wesley Towers. He was born March 16, 1941, in Hutchinson, the son of Grant Raymond Sr. and Freda Henrietta (Sly) Colby.

He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1959 and attended Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Army as a PFC from 1959 - 1962. Grant retired from Cargill Salt after 40 years. Grant was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where he was a PSR teacher and part of the parish council. He was involved in the Cursillo Movement and volunteered as a mentor in the 3M program at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. Additionally, he volunteered for the Reno County Sheriff's Department Senior Patrol, and was a member and former president of ICWUC/UFCW, the International Chemical Workers Union Council. Grant was a faithful fan of the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, attending all the ball games with his son.

On Feb. 23, 1963, he married Mary Curiel in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: four children, Laura Regier and husband Bart of McPherson, James Colby, Debra Colby, and Susan Mendoza, all of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren, Israel, Sienna and Bella Mendoza, Ian Bleu, Mariah, Cheyenne and Ross Regier; a great-grandchild, Emmerie Flores; a sister, Thelma Garrison of Anaheim, Calif.; and a brother, Leo Colby of Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marie Mahoney.

Parish rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson, with Celebration of Christian Burial to be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, celebrated by Father Ned J. Blick. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
