Ray Showalter, 89, of Hutchinson, died May 14, 2011, at Russell Regional Hospital, Russell.
He was born July 2, 1921, in Larned, the son of Calvin and Florence Rice Showalter.
He was a graduate of Partridge High School in 1937, and moved to Hutchinson, when he worked for the Barton Salt Co. He later moved to Lyons and worked for Derby Oil Co. as a pump station operator until 1950. He then operated Showalter Bros. Trucking in Hutchinson until 1965. He also sold trucks for International Harvester Corp. After retirement, he developed two mobile home parks in Hutchinson, one being the Prairie Hills Park on 11th Avenue. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post # 68, and had served on the Reno County Planning Board. He was a former member of the Hutchinson Lions Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific in World War II.
On June 14, 1941, he married Lois Meisenheimer in Hutchinson. She died March 28, 1987. He later married Jessie Drake on May 6, 1991, in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Larry Showalter and wife LaVeda, Hutchinson; two daughters, Sandra Baccinelli, Pearland, Texas, and Judy Swisher, Shawnee; a step-son, Dan Drake, Hutchinson; two step-daughters, Terri Kelsey, Dickinson, Texas, and Kim Niehaus, Hutchinson; a brother, Lowell Showalter, Hutchinson; a sister, Velva Mapes, Rapid City, S.D.; five grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, and a grandson, Tommy Showalter on Jan. 5, 1985.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2011, at New Hope Baptist Church, with Pastor Harold Nelson presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Ft. Riley. Visitation will be Tuesday 3 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening 7 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
