Harry J. DeGarmo, 93, died February 15, 2022, at his home. He was born November 7, 1928, in Macksville, the son of Clyde F. and Clara (Mitchell) DeGarmo. Harry was the youngest of their 15 children.
Harry attended Hutchinson Community College, Emporia State University, and Wichita State University. He earned his CPA license in 1970.
Harry moved to Hutchinson from Garden City, in 1964. He was an accountant for Ark Valley Cooperative Dairy, a partner in the CPA firm of J. William Knightly and Company, and later held various positions in the accounting department at Dillon Stores. He retired in February of 1994, after 21 years of service for Dillon Stores.
Harry was an avid woodworker. He enjoyed home remodeling, and building furniture and cabinets for his family, friends, and the churches he attended. Harry's favorite project was making rocking horses; he built over 100 of them, gifting them to family and friends.
Harry attended Grace Bible Church, and was a former member of Park Place Christian Church and Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church.
On July 3, 1949, Harry married LaWanda Miller in Macksville; she died November 19, 1990. He married Sheila A. (Bartlett) Gumble on March 21, 1991.
Harry is survived by: his wife, Sheila of Hutchinson; children, Anita DeZego (John) of St. Louis, MO, Jay DeGarmo (Becky) of Las Vegas, NV, Lisa Johnson (Steven) of Omaha, NE, Lori Mallory (Steven) of Olathe, Martin Gumble (Donna) of Hutchinson, Michelle Reavis (Joe) of Nickerson, Mitch Gumble (Jill), Matthew Gumble, and Melinda Ayres (Doug), all of Hutchinson; son-in-law, Kurt Wilcoxen of Independence, MO; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and over 50 nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by: his parents; a daughter, Mona Wilcoxen, 10 brothers; and four sisters.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Grace Bible Church, 1221 E. 33 rd , Hutchinson. Private inurnment will be in Farmington Cemetery, Macksville. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grace Bible Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
