Obituary

Hazel Fae Doherty, 90, died March 11, 2013, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Sylvan Grove, Kan., the daughter of Norman F. and Ida Wendling Hurlbut.

She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in 1940 and Kansas Wesleyan University in 1945. She completed additional graduate work at Wichita State University. She lived in Hutchinson since 1955, moving from Salina. She taught Business Administration for 4 years at Stockton High School. After moving to Hutchinson, she taught adult education at Hutchinson Community College. She was then employed by USD #308 as an elementary teacher at Lincoln. The last 10 years of her career, she served as a Reading Specialist at Lincoln, McCandless, Faris and Graber Elementary. She served several years on a State committee for elementary schools. She retired in 1988.

On Dec. 20, 1946, she married Edward F. Doherty in Salina. He survives.

Other survivors include: daughters, Linda Hopwood and husband Jim of Paola, Jan Ellis and husband Richard of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jennifer Hopwood Dickson and husband Tim of Hickory Corners, Mich., Erica Hopwood of Manhattan, Corey Ellis of Emporia; nieces, Dixie Heck and husband Ron of Westlake Village, Calif. and Donna Cardinal and husband Don of Topeka. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lloyd W. Hurlbut and his wife Margaret of Lincoln, Neb.; sisters, Ruby Boundy and husband Austin of Wichita and Juanita Stewart and husband Leo of Topeka.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, taught pre-school Sunday school, and served on various committees. She was also a member of United Methodist Women. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Heart of Kansas Quilt Guild, a former member of the Prairie Quilt Guild of Wichita and a former member of the Hutchinson Women's Bowling Association and the Carey Park Women's Golf Association. In addition to devotion to her family, she enjoyed gardening, quilting, and bridge.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, with Reverend Michael McGuire officiating. A private family inurnment will take place. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the HCC Scholarship Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
