Helen A. Hoener Hester, 92, died Jan. 4, 2006, at Oliver and Helen Hester Care Center, Wesley Towers.
She was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Blue Rapids, the daughter of Joseph H. and Rebecca Billingsley Elliott. She was a graduate of Stafford High School. A Hutchinson resident since 1970, moving from Great Bend, she had taught at a country school in the Stafford area and had been employed by the Central Kansas Library Book Processing Center, Great Bend.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, Together Sunday School Class, was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, was superintendent of Primary Department at First United Methodist Church, Great Bend, and was a member of P.E.O. Chapter BY for more than 50 years. She and her husband, Oliver, were great supporters of Hutchinson through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, and were avid world travelers, including such destinations as Athens, Tahiti and the Canary Islands.
On Aug. 18, 1936, she married Grant L. Hoener in Stafford. He died April 9, 1967. She later married Oliver R. Hester on March 28, 1970, in Hutchinson. He died Dec. 1, 1997.
Survivors include: a son, Joseph E. Hoener and wife, Janet, Hutchinson; a daughter, Sarah E. Shirer and husband, Brad, Great Bend; a brother, Roland Elliott, Hutchinson; a sister, Elizabeth Smith, Huntsville, Texas; six grandchildren, Susan Robertson, William Sowles, Samuel Hoener, Augusta Hoener, Cpl. Anthony Dart III, USMC, and Mary Dart; seven great-grandchildren, Aaron, Nathan, Logan and Cody Robertson and David, Conner and Alyssa Sowles.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Franklin and Samuel Elliott and son-in-law, Bill Sowles.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Stafford Cemetery.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the church, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center or Wesley Towers, all in care of the mortuary.
