Helen (Peterson) Janke was received in the arms of our Lord and Savior on Jan. 16, 2016. She was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Monument (located in Logan County), the daughter of Charles and Esther Peterson.
Helen was a gifted teacher and mentor. Most of her early teaching career occurred at Bazine, and later the parochial school at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Neb. She was a very active member at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Bazine, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, as well as many, many civic organizations in the community. Her mission work included crocheting hats for cancer patients and sending cards to the church shut-ins.
On June 4, 1939, she married Lester A. Janke. She is survived by: daughter-in-law, Jeanette Janke of Omaha, Neb.; twin children, son, Gary Janke (Marilyn) of Dallas, Texas and daughter, Karen Schwartzkopf (Lynn) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Aaron Janke (Lucy) of Ann Arbor, Mich., Grant Janke (Sara) of Omaha, Neb., Phillip Schwartzkopf (Kristen) of Dallas, Texas, Mark Schwartzkopf (Emily) of Hutchinson, Shonda Janke of Georgetown, Texas, and Delanie Pfetzer (Chris) of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Ethan, Drew, Addison, Collin, Alex, Lily, Joshua, and Nicholas. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lester; son, Allen; brother, Carl Peterson and wife Elsie; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with the Reverends Chad Trunkhill and Henry Blickhahn officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, with the family to receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.
