Helen Rhogene Rowland, 104, died Feb. 18, 2006, at Ralph Thorne Care Center, Wesley Towers, Hutchinson.
She was born June 11, 1901, on the family farm north of Hutchinson, the firstborn child
of Charles William and Iowa Gabriella Vincent Rowland. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and the Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, she taught in the public schools of Kansas for 33 years, teaching in Buhler, Prosperity, Obee, Pretty Prairie, Turon, Lawrence, Hutchinson (4th Avenue, Roosevelt and Sherman) and Topeka. Later, after studying library science at Denver University, she was employed as a librarian for Grace Hospital School of Nursing for 10 years.
She was a charter member of Park Place Christian Church, American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma, all in Hutchinson. She was also a member of the Kansas State Teacher's College of Emporia (Emporia State University) Alumni Association, Kappa Delta Pi (Honorary Society in Education), Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Association, Sherman Retired Women, Christian Women's Fellowship and Prosperity Sharing Sisters.
Survivors include: 14 nephews and nieces, G. Howard Rowland, Hutchinson, Marjorie Ensz, Hutchinson, Charles W. Rowland, Bay City, Texas, John R. "Jack" Wempe, Lyons, Ruth Hoffman, Hutchinson, Evelyn Henricks, Hutchinson, Kathryn Giefer, Wellington, Colo., Clyde V. Rowland, Hutchinson, Emilie Dell, Dallastown, Pa., Lawrence K. Wempe, Center Valley, Pa., Mary Jo May, Salina, Margaret Ann Holland, Hutchinson, Mary Alice Schaeffer, Hagerstown, Md., and William L. "Bill" Wempe, Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William V. Rowland; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Morris and Alice Clyfton Wempe; and several great- and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Kim Biery presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
