Homer C. Jennings, 98, died July 27, 2011, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
He was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Bucklin, the son of CD and Fannie Jennings.
A lifelong Hutchinson resident, he was a 1930 graduate of Hutchinson High School. In 1934, Homer graduated with a business degree from the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He joined his father in the grain business and continued until 1968. He was first lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. Homer was a lifelong member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church and Troop #301 Scout Master in the 1950s. He served as president of numerous community and business organizations, including the Hutchinson Board of Trade, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and Prairie Dunes Country Club.
On March 4, 1939, he married Dorothy Lemon in Pratt. She died in June 1974. On Feb. 18, 1977, he married Arlene Johnson, who died in January 2002.
Survivors include: four children, Charles and wife Gerry of Great Falls, Mont., Bill and wife Alicia of Kansas City and Pratt, Jane Peterson and husband Gary of Ventura, Calif., and Debbie Mosier and husband Roger of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Homer had an insatiable appetite for travel and he circled the globe. He enjoyed meticulous planning, and his travel provided subjects for his gifted photography. He also enjoyed the travelogues, which he presented at the Town Club upon his return to Hutchinson. His trip to Antarctica in the '70s triggered a fascination with penguins. In addition, he loved golf (kept the ball in the fairway) and KU basketball.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Amy Dame presiding. Private family entombment will be at Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson Art Center or Boy Scouts, in care of Elliott Mortuary.
