Obituary

Howard J. "Jake" Carey Jr., 89, died April 17, 2007, at Via Christi Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Hutchinson, the son of Howard J. Carey Sr. and Louise Banks Carey. In 1934, he graduated from Hutchinson High School, in 1938 from Dartmouth University and the University of Michigan school of law in 1941. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, he was retired president of Carey Salt Co.

He belonged to Grace Episcopal Church and was a charter member of the Prairie Dunes Country Club, which was founded by the Carey family, member of the Augusta National Golf Club, member of the executive committee of the United States Golf Association, past-president of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association, a charter inductee in the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame and numerous other civic community boards. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946. He was an officer in the Seabees, serving in the South Pacific.

On Sept. 10, 1941, he married Patricia Brooks in Oklahoma City, Okla. She died Jan. 1, 2003.

Survivors include: three sons, Brooks Carey and his wife, Nan, Charlotte, N.C., Christopher Carey and his wife, Molly, Richmond, Va., and Michael Carey and his wife, Amy, Ada, Mich.; a sister, Sis Johnston, St. Augustine, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bim Carey; and a sister, Marg Klode.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Michael P. Milliken officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the church columbarium. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center foundation or the Grace Episcopal Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary.
