Obituary

Ila Leona McCammond, 94, died March 12, 2012, at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kan. Born Ila Leona Snook on June 4, 1917, in May, Okla., the youngest of seven children born to Martin Eddie and Margaret Jane (Monaghan) Snook.

Retired from Cessna Aircraft Hydraulics Division with 42 years of service, an original Rosie the Riveter, she started working for Cessna in 1941 as a gas welder. War years brought continuing work on military gliders, B-52s and Cessna built furniture. For 35 years she was plant receptionist, telephone and teletype operator at Cessna Aircraft Hydraulics Division in Hutchinson, Kan.

Ila married sweetheart, Warren E. McCammond, on Aug. 19, 1934, in Macksville, Kan. They had no children. Both were licensed private pilots and flew single engine Cessna Flying Club aircraft to many destinations within the United States. Warren died on Sept. 24, 1975, Ila flew little thereafter. Also preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Elmer, David and Lee Snook; along with sisters, Mrs. Ada Ellen Vanfleet, Mrs. Elsie Caroline Alderson, and Mrs. Verlie May Baker.

Her brother, Lee was killed in World War II and is buried in Luxemburg, Germany.

She was a member of The American Legion Auxiliary-Lysle Rishel #68 of Hutchinson, Ninety-Niners-International Organization of Women Pilots, Past President of the Social Order of the Beauceant Assembly #8 of Wichita, and Past Matron of Silver Leaf Chapter #464-Order of Eastern Star, Hutchinson.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Belpre Cemetery, Belpre, Kan., with Chaplain Dan Dalke officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
