Obituary

Ivan D. Smith, 85, died Aug. 28, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born June 24, 1922, near Delphos, the son of Rupert H. and Vesta M. Durst Smith. He was a resident of Hutchinson since 2002, moving from Bella Vista, Ark. He graduated from Delphos High School in 1940 and attended Salt City Business College and later graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1962 with a double major in agriculture and botany. He was a farmer and soil conservationist with the USDA. He also worked previously in Osborne, Coldwater and Burlington. He served in World War II in the United States Army.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, N.A.R.F.E., American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, Hutchinson, former member and charter member of the Osborne Lions Club, former member of the Rotary Club, Burlington, a was volunteer working with the United Methodist Church at McCurdy School, N.M. He also went on mission trips to Chile and Mexico and volunteered for Interfaith Housing, Youth Friends, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Faith In Action, and was very active in recycling papers.

On June 2, 1946, he married Marjorie J. Wise in Pittsburg. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Ivalee G. Vanderhoff and husband, Earl, Halstead, and Juanita K. Hanhardt and husband, Ron, Otis; four grandchildren, Ryan Hanhardt, Joel Hanhardt, Rita Hanhardt and Jeffery Hanhardt; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by and his parents; and a sister, Lois Shirley.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Ault-Duell presiding. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Delphos Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Delphos Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Reno County or Delphos United Methodist Church, both in care of the funeral home.
