Obituary

J. Wesley Nunemaker, 94, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at University Village, Tulsa, Okla. He was born July 9, 1919, at Langdon, the son of Joseph Jr. and Gladys Mary Kabler Nunemaker.

He was a graduate of Langdon High School, attended Southwestern College and Kansas State University, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a farmer and stockman in the Langdon community. Wesley served on numerous community and civic organizations including: Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Reno County Extension Council, Reno County Farm Bureau, Kansas Wheat Growers Association, Ark Valley Electric Cooperative Association and received the Kansas Master Farmer award in 1973. Wesley was committed to education and served on the Board for Langdon High School from 1952 to 1958, Fairfield High School from 1958 to 1965, Fairfield USD #310 from 1965 to 1973, (chairman four years), Kansas Legislative Committee representing Hutchinson Community College advisory board and Board of Trustees from 1959 to 1991, (served as vice-chairman five times and chairman seven times). He served for 14 years as HCC's representative on the Board of Control of Central Kansas Area Vocational Technical School, delegate to the Kansas Association of Community Colleges, serving one year as vice-chairman and one year as chairman. In 1959, the college campus consisted of three buildings; now they have 13 on the North campus, plus lease space in the Naval Reserve Training Center and Sports Arena, acquired 425 acres for the South campus in 1970 and soon moved into the Pioneer Seed facilities. They received their first Title IV grant in 1971. Education programs for inmates were initiated in 1973. Extensive computer programs were implemented in 1977. Public radio station KHCC began operation in 1979. The Board created a special scholarship fund to aid people in Reno County, who needed to train or re-train for employment. Wes was a "Doer" and had been a leader in each organization in which he had participated.

On Aug. 22, 1937, he married Twila V. Reece in Langdon. She died Nov. 26, 2013.

He is survived by their two children, Marcia Kay Clark of Emporia, Wayne and his wife Linda of Jenks, Okla.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Megan and Dennis Jones of Coweta, Okla., Preston and Casey Nunemaker of Tulsa, Okla., Ron and Melanie Kunkel of Waverly, Wesley and Debbie Kunkel of Emporia; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Kunkel, Dylan Kunkel, Ashlyn Nunemaker, He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marion, Charles and Robert.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Reverend Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in the Lerado Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
