Obituary

Jackie J. Cardwell-Vansickle, 86, passed away Nov. 1, 2014, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Arkansas City to John B. and Mary Jane Hines.

Jackie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1946. She received a nursing degree from St. Elizabeth Mercy School of Nursing, graduating in 1949. Jackie worked over 50 years as a Registered Nurse for St. Elizabeth, Grace Hospital, and Hutchinson Hospital in the maternal, infant, and nursery care units. She was a March of Dimes "Nurse of the Year." Jackie was a member of Wesley Hospital "Prenatal Team." They traveled the state to help smaller hospitals improve and update their care. She was a member of several nurses organizations. She retired in 1986 and later returned back to work as a nurse supervisor at Hutchinson Heights. She retired again in 1990.

Jackie married Raymond Rex Cardwell on Sept. 7, 1949, in Hutchinson. He passed away Dec. 8, 1985. She then married Richard G. Vansickle on April 20, 1990. He passed away May 28, 2010.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents and husbands. Survivors include: son, Steven W. Cardwell and wife Susie of Hutchinson; daughters, Susan K. Miller and husband John of Hutchinson, Rexann M. Smith and Mike of Inman; stepson, Marlo Vansickle and wife Joan of Jefferson City, Mo.; stepdaughters, Verlinda Hurst and husband Steve of Burrton, Patricia Scates of Omaha, Neb., Vickie Bass of Arizona; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 11 step great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Graveside Service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.
