James "Jim" M. Hawkins, 89, died Sept. 29, 2016, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1927, in Sterling, to Newt and Violet (Beatty) Hawkins. Jim graduated from Sterling High School in 1945. He was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Germany following the end of World War II. Jim was an optician and former co-owner of Singleton-Joyce Optical for 56 years. He was of the Methodist faith.
On June 16, 1950, he married Marie Allison in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: sons, Doug and wife Valerie of Los Angeles, Calif., Steve and husband Christopher Britton of Hutchinson; daughter, Diane Ehling of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Andrew Ehling and wife Jodi of McPherson, Zane Ehling and wife Jenni of Garden Plain, Abby Ehling and husband Francisco Florencio of Lawrence, Lucas Ehling of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Brecklynn and Sawyer Ehling of McPherson, and Sophie, Cora, and Morris Ehling of Garden Plain; and brother, Richard Hawkins and wife Norma of Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. J. Ted Blakley officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson or Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
