James M. 'Jim' McCarty, 99, of Hutchinson, died June 3, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson Village.  He was born May 24, 1920, in Great Bend, to Charles Edward and Josephine (Tucker) McCarty.

Jim worked as a meat cutter for Thies Packing in Great Bend and Winchester Food in Hutchinson, retiring as a truck driver for Winchester Food. He served in the United States Army during the European Theatre of World War II.  Jim was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and Loyal Order of Moose #982.  He was fiercely independent, living in his own home until March.  Jim enjoyed playing poker and listening to 'Big Band Music'.

On June 21, 1944, he married Jean Buckley in Topeka.  She died September 27, 1995.

Jim is survived by:  daughter, Carolyn 'Susie' Sims and husband Mike of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Julie Westall and husband Jeff of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Amanda Rigg of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Jordan Westall, Jenna Dickall and husband Josh, Jacob Westall and wife Brittany, Aislynn Boor, Ehtan Rigg, Evan Rigg; four great-great-grandchildren, (with one on the way); and companion, Arlene Shaver, Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; son, Leslie Edward McCarty; and two sisters.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastors Tim Adrian and Eldon Smith officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.   Private family inurnment will take place in the Great Bend Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.  Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Society, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
