James "Jim" Rumsey, 84, died Aug. 18, 2015, at Hester Care Center, Wesley Towers. He was born Dec. 6, 1930, in Ellis County, the son of John Rumsey and Rose (Karlin) Rumsey.
Jim met his wife, Betty Ann Chappel, while attending Buhler High School. Shortly after graduation, Jim briefly served his country at the conclusion of World War II. Upon his service discharge, Jim worked with various area Hutchinson upholstery businesses until opening and operating the Rumsey Sports Center. For nearly 30 years, Jim and Betty successfully owned and operated the boat and recreational vehicle business, forging many life-long friendships with devoted customers throughout Kansas. Upon closing of Rumsey Sports Center in 1981, Jim returned to his original craft of upholstery and worked tirelessly into his 70s. Jim derived immense pleasure from gardening, landscaping, and many other outdoor hobbies. Those who knew him remember Jim best for his tireless energy and devotion to his family.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Ann; daughter, Nancy Hughbanks (Steve) of Wichita; son, Roger Rumsey (Lorilee) of Los Alamos, New Mexico; grandchildren, Staci Dean, Stephanie Warner, and Bryce Hughbanks, all of Wichita; nine great-grandchildren; a great great-grandchild; brothers, Bob Rumsey of Seattle, Wash., Eddie and Larry Wolcott of Hutchinson; and sisters, Patty Kaul of Wichita, and Annie Black of Amarillo, Texas. He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Randy Rumsey; and brother, Bill Rumsey.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastors Kent Pedersen and Bones Nay officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.
