Jane Ann Douglass Wiley, 89, of Hutchinson, died June 22, 2011, at Hospice House after a short illness. She was born Aug. 25, 1921, at the home of her grandmother in Dexter, Kansas, to Charles and Gladys Elliott Douglass. Shortly after her birth, she moved with her family to Wichita, where she attended school and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1938. She attended Wichita State University for two years and then went to Kansas State University, where she graduated in 1942 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. While at Kansas State University, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
After graduation, she worked for Beech Aircraft for 1 1/2 years and later moved to Chicago, where she worked at Carson Pirie & Scott Dept. Store from 1944-1947 in the personnel department. While working there, she met her future husband, and she and Robert E. Wiley were married Sept. 21, 1947. After moving to Hutchinson, she and Robert owned the Wiley Department Store. Jane took special interest in Wiley's Tea Room and helped with the publishing of several Tea Room recipe cookbooks. Jane was active on the Mitchell School Board, the Reno County Historical Society Board, the Channel 8 PBS Board, and the Advisory Health Committee to the Kansas Senate. Jane was an original member of the Dillon Nature Center Board of Directors.
Jane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Chapter CM of P.E.O. She was a 50 year resident of Willowbrook, where she volunteered as city clerk and treasurer for 25 years.
She was an avid fisherman and hunter, and also enjoyed tennis, golf, and bowling. She loved Kansas history and enjoyed planning and directing historic day trips of the First National Bank First Classic program. Watching and listening to sports of any kind was something that she also enjoyed. She is survived by three sons, Doug Wiley and wife Sandra, Manhattan, Jack Wiley and wife Nita, Manhattan, and Ted Wiley and wife Kathy, Olathe; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Douglass.
A private family graveside has taken place at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Amy Dame presiding. A register book may be signed at Elliott Mortuary.
