Janice J. Withington, 76, died August 2, 2013 at her home in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. She was born April 27, 1937, in Norwich, New York, the daughter of Lewis and Ona (Martin) Withington. A beloved sister and aunt, Jan will always be remembered by her family and held in their hearts. Janice graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955. She received her B.S. in Education from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Master of Education from Sam Houston State College in Texas and Master of Geosciences from Colorado School of Mines. Janice taught elementary school for 10 years in Hutchinson Kansas, and was an educator for over 30 years in Jefferson County (JEFFCO) Public Schools in Colorado, and was honored for her many achievements as a passionate educator who touched the lives of thousands throughout her long career.
Jan was the family historian, avid miniaturist, and a passionate advocate for the preservation and conservation of the environment, whether it be city, the wilderness, or for the entire planet earth. She continued these efforts until the very end.
Jan's home was an open and revolving door to her nieces, nephews and cousins as each one came and left over the years whether the stay involved weeks, months or years.
Surviving family include: a brother, Martin Withington of McAllen, Texas; a sister, Carol Huntsman of Bedford, Texas; grand nephew Jason Huntsman, six nieces and nephews, Debbie Huntsman, Greg Huntsman, Tracy Huntsman, Nicki Huntsman-Smith, Shawn Withington-Patterson, Jeffery Withington, eight grand nieces and nephews, one great grand nephew and numerous cousins.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Joe Rychcik presiding. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Outdoor Education Foundation in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson KS 67501.
