Jean Arbuckle Graber, 103, died May 13, 2015, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born March 26, 1912, in Rice County, to Charles A. and Myrtle (Strohm) Arbuckle.
Jean graduated from a one-room country school in Rice County, Nickerson High School and the University of Kansas. She taught high school for three years in Ruleton and also at Macksville, and was a substitute teacher at Pretty Prairie Grade School and Pretty Prairie High School. Jean was a member of the Nickerson Christian Church, later moving her membership to the First Mennonite Church, Pretty Prairie, where she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was very involved in her church. Jean also volunteered at the Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie, the Et Cetera Shop, Hutchinson, and at various places in Topeka, when her husband served in the Kansas Legislature.
On Dec. 22, 1935, she married W.W. "Sprig" Graber. He passed away July 3, 2003. Survivors include: daughters, Mary Collins (Mark) of Greeley, Colo., and Helen Unruh (Wayne) of Hutchinson; son-in-law, Neil Crane of Mesa Ariz.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great great-grandson. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Sprig; daughter, Geraldine Crane; and her sister, Martha Murray.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at First Mennonite Church, Pretty Prairie, with Pastor Don Roberts officiating. Private family burial will take place. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to the W.W. and Jean Graber Pretty Prairie Scholarship Fund (benefitting Pretty Prairie High School), First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie or Mennonite Friendship Communities, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
