Obituary

Jerry Eugene Hoefer, 74, died March 14, 2006, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Hutchinson, the son of Melvin F. and Audrey Warrick Hoefer. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1950 Hutchinson Community College in 1956 and Fort Hays State University, Hays, in 1958. He was an auditor for 38 years, retiring in 1996, having worked for Kansas Farmers Service Association, CR Rock Company and Robe CPA of Dodge City.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church; Doer's Sunday School class at Trinity United Methodist Church; Hutchinson Horticulture Club; Sunflower Crankers; Hutchinson Horseless Carriage Club; American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68; Ransom Veteran of Foreign Wars; on the Board of Directors, Fort Hays State University Alumni; Treasurer of Reins of Hope; Cancer Council of Reno County; a Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary volunteer; and Scout Leader for Troop No. 343. His hobbies included planning 1950 Class Reunions and driving his 1924 model T Touring Car in parades. He was a loving helpmate, father and friend to many people. He knew very few strangers and had a good sense of humor. He served in the Navy from 1950 to 1954 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippines Sea.

On Oct. 26, 1958, he married Joanne M. Weiss in South Hutchinson Methodist Church. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, David Hoefer and wife, Hannah, Partridge, and Douglas Hoefer, Independence, Mo.; and two brothers, Robert Hoefer, Escondido, Calif., and James Hoefer, Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with graveside rites conducted by the Navy Honor Guard.
