Margaret Joan McKinney, 83, died September 17, 2019, at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. She was born July 27, 1936, in Wichita, the daughter of proud parents, Stanley and Margaret (Jessen) Shaft. Joan grew up in a lively household with her four brothers: Jerry, David, Donald, John, and their dog, Sam.
She was a devoted member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, where she was active in fellowship groups, Circle, Senior Club, and Christ Care. Joan was also co-founder of The Pitch Club, meeting monthly to play cards and socialize. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, baking cookies, listening to classical and opera music, doing crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and tending her thriving indoor plants. Joan was a gifted poet and was famous for her Christmas decorating, including a tree in every room!
On June 28, 1959, Joan married her beloved husband, Wallace Gene 'Wally' McKinney in Hutchinson. They shared 56 years of marriage before his death on January 24, 2016. She and Wally enjoyed traveling together (both literally and figuratively), visiting every state in the United States, as well as parts of Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and Africa. They were blessed with three children: Jan, David (who died in infancy), and Rob; as well as their granddaughter, Karen. Joan deeply loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them, as they did with her.
She is survived by: daughter, Janet and son-in-law, Hyo-Jin So of Olympia WA, son, Robert McKinney and fiancé, Kristy Wescott of Grayland WA; granddaughter, Karen So of Seattle, WA; brothers, John (her twin) and wife Jeanne of Wichita, David and wife Elizabeth of Summerfield, FL; and many family and friends who will miss her greatly.
Joan was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Wally; son, David; and brothers, Jerry and Donald.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30 th Ave., Hutchinson, with Pastor Tim Carey officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from now until October 4. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church or Larksfield Place, Wichita, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
