Obituary

After a long illness, John Riley Bether died peacefully at the age of 78 on Feb. 3, 2008, at the Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community in Buhler, KS. He was born on May 25, 1929, to parents August and Norma Owen Bether in Nashville, KS. At the age of 12, John moved to Hutchinson with his family. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1948. On February 26, 1950, he married Donna J. Dean.

John served in the National Guard of Kansas. After driving trucks for 36 years he retired from Dillons Company Transportation Department in 1991. He was recognized and honored with an award of Outstanding Driver before his retirement. After retiring from Dillons, he drove a school bus for the Nickerson School District. John and Donna Lived in Nickerson for 30 years before moving to Buhler two years ago.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 57 year, Donna Bether. He is survived by three sisters, Donna Tilton of Hutchinson, Florence Crump of Montezuma, and Lois and husband Ed Doeksen of Buhler. Other survivors include his son, John W. and wife, Nancy of Hutchinson; son Terry A. of Hutchinson, and daughter, Beth Ellen of Westminster, Colorado. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

John was the grandfather of Heather K. and husband Gary Pitts, Jennifer A. and Husband Michael (Mike) Nugent, Michael A. Bether, Josh A. and wife Nancy Bether, and Jason Riley Bether. He was the proud great-grandfather of Kaeci and Zak Smalling, Madison and Baelie Pitts, Micah Irene Bether-Nugent, and James Riley Bether. John was a member of the Lutheran Faith. Services for John R. Bether will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Crematory and Mausoleum with Chaplain Melvin Walton officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.
