John Dennis "Jack" Coleman, 88, died Aug. 25, 2014, at the Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Boston, Mass., to John Coleman Sr. and Agnes (Sullivan) Coleman.
He lived in Boston and New York City before serving the country in WWII as an Air Force bombardier, having achieved the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he graduated from Dartmouth College where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. On Oct. 13, 1953, he married the former JoAnn McNaghten of Hutchinson, at Grace Episcopal Church. The couple made Hutchinson their home. Jack joined the family business, ultimately becoming president of the McNaghten Insurance Company before its 1990 merger with Fee Insurance. In addition, Jack served as chairman of the board of the Railroad Savings and Loan Association. He was actively involved in arts, cultural and civic organizations in Hutchinson; he was past president of the board of trustees of the Hutchinson Public Library, as well as being a longtime supporter of the Hutchinson Symphony, the Rotary Club and other organizations. He also was a fervent sports fan, and happily exchanged his East Coast loyalties for a passionate devotion to a range of Kansas sports teams, from the Salthawks to the Jayhawks.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, "Jody," and his son, Kent Dennis Coleman.
He is survived by: his son, Michael Charles Coleman and his wife Lisa Apostle Coleman of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; daughter-in-law, Jan Groseclose Coleman, a Hutchinson native who now resides in Bothell, Wash.; grandchildren, Anne Catherine Coleman and Charles McNaghten Coleman of San Miguel de Allende, Matthew Kemp Coleman and Christopher Dennis Coleman and wife Veronica of Bothell.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park, with the Reverend Andrew S. Hook officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
