Obituary

Jim died at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, KS, February 16, 2009.

He was born in Oklahoma City, February 3, 1929, to John R. and Mildred White Wharton.

He graduated from high school in Hoxie, KS in 1947, and attended Kansas State University. While in high school he had his own dance band, "Jimmy Lee."

Jim enlisted in the Navy serving from 1948, through 1952, he was in the U.S. Navy Band and attended the Washington D.C. School of Music. Stationed in Hawaii, he played taps on the U.S.S. Arizona every morning in the early 50's.

Jim was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Past Master and a member of the Shrine in Napa, CA.

He sold Bibles door to door for L.B. Price Company, worked for Mutual of Omaha as a sales director and general agent, and also sold automobiles. He was an admirer of autos and enjoyed his Alfa Romero with the top down.

On July 6, 1952, he married Wilma Walden. To this union were born, Joe, Susan and Jill, and an infant daughter, Nancy, who died at birth.

Jim was a fun loving person. He enjoyed practical jokes, playing Scrabble, crossword puzzles and playing cards. He was very witty. He enjoyed the Wednesday morning breakfast with the men from Faith United Methodist Church. Jim and Wilma moved from Napa, Calif., September of 2006, to Hutchinson to enjoy their retirement and a more relaxed life style. His family and grandchildren were very special to him.

He is survived by: his wife, Wilma; son, Joe Wharton; daughters, Jill Wharton, Susan Dahlgren, son-in-law, Ray Dahlgren, grandchildren, Brian Dahlgren, John Dahlgren, Rachel Dahlgren and Jimmy Wharton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pauline and Jerome Heim; five nephews; a niece; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kite presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Graveside service will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Hoxie Cemetery, Hoxie.
