Obituary

John Hugh McFarland, 90, passed away Oct. 31, 2008, at Hospice House.

He was born April 19, 1918, the son of William Lloyd and Daisy Belle Hensley McFarland.

He served in the Army during World War II as a machine gunner and driver on a half track in the European Theater with the 14th Armored Field Artillery of the second Armored Division from Dec. of 1942 to Oct. of 1945.

He served in the Korean Conflict from May 1949 to Dec. 1952, as a mechanic with the 453rd Engineer Battalion B Company.

He worked as a guard for the Hutchinson Correctional Reformatory for 32 years. He retired in 1981.

He was a member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68.

On November 28, 1947, he married Norma Joy Grubbs. She survives. Other survivors include: a daughter Jo Ann Gauthier and husband Stephen, Hutchinson; two grandchildren Shane Gauthier, Lawrence, and Kelly Gauthier, Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by twin daughters Delores Lou and Diane Sue and a brother William Lloyd McFarland Jr.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary with Pastor Roger Neir presiding. Visitation will be Saturday 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with family present to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burrton Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Reno County or the American Diabetes Association in care of the mortuary.
