John Harvey Quick, 89, died Monday, March 16, 2015. He was born Jan. 14, 1926, at Mankato, the son of Roy and Anna (Robinette) Quick.
He worked at South-western Bell Telephone for 41 years, retiring in 1987 as supervisor of the Central Toll Office. John was drafted out of Haviland High School in 1944 to serve in World War II, later getting his GED at Hutchinson Community College. He served in the U.S. Army 77th Infantry, referred to as the Statue of Liberty division, serving in the Pacific Theater and was involved with the invasion of Okinawa. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion, VFW Bob Campbell Post 1361 and the Telephone Pioneers. On Oct. 13, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Vada Louise Wilson, in Haviland. She survives. He is survived by: their sons and spouses, Dennis, Ron (Vickie) and Gerald, all of Hutchinson, Ken (Liz) of Ft. Worth, Texas; a brother, Eldon (Francis) of Rantoul, Ill.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Norma Dunlap and Ardath Avery; a brother, Dallas; and infant brother, Wendell.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Burial with military honors conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
