Joseph Frank 'Joe' Decker, 80, of Hutchinson, died July 4, 2020, at his residence. He was born October 26, 1939, in Hebron, NE, to Lyndon Harold and Myrtle Melissa (Minnick) Decker.
Joe graduated from Hutchinson High School and served in the United States Navy. He retired as a Captain from the City of Hutchinson Fire Department, and worked in maintenance at Central Christian School, Hutchinson. He enjoyed attending Hutchinson Community College basketball games, the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's National Basketball Tournament, and Hutchinson Monarchs' baseball games. Joe was an avid fisherman and gardener, and a lifetime member of Forest Park Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, now known as New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson. His most rewarding job and passion, however, was being a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and caregiver for his forty-four year old special needs son, Michael.
On June 15, 1962, Joe married Geraldine 'Geri' Petering, in Hutchinson. They shared over fifty-seven years of marriage, prior to her death on September 9, 2019.
He is survived by: his children, James Decker of Hutchinson, Renee (Kerry) Robinson of Hutchinson, Kristy (Scott) Welchons of San Marcos, CA, and Michael Decker of Hutchinson; nineteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, John (Celia) Decker of Colorado, and James (Karen) Decker of Illinois; and sister, Jean Decker of Colorado.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Geraldine 'Geri' Decker.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 700 E. 25th Avenue, Hutchinson, with Rev. Craig Waetke officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2020, through Friday, July 17, 2020, at Elliott Mortuary. Family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time, Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Central Christian School, Hutchinson, or TECH, Inc., in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
