Joseph Bernard Johanning, 92, died Oct. 11, 2014, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Ellinwood, to Barney and Jane Johanning.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 on the USS Oakland. Joseph married Alice Darlene Mummey in 1945, in Hutchinson. She died in Sept. of 1959. He married Letha VanCampen on Nov. 24, 1961, in Hutchinson. She survives. Joseph was a machinist at Cessna for many years before retiring in 1986. He enjoyed spending time at Elmdale Community Center and Delos V. Smith Senior Center.
Survivors include: his wife Letha of Hutchinson; daughters, Susan Baize and husband Clovis of Gravois Mills, Mo., Sharon Childs and husband Kevin, and Raenell Johanning, all of Hutchinson; son, Kenneth Johanning and wife Thanh of Moreno Valley, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; grandson, Hai Johanning; great-granddaughter, Brooke Johanning; two brothers; and a sister.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Hutchinson or to Delos V.
